The Mydoom virus is a mass-mailing worm that arrives as an attachement in an email. Once the attachment is opened, the virus will open a "port" in your computer allowing an attacker to possibly take control of the computer or use it to access files and network resources.
The attacker is also able to upload/download and run files on your computer.
The worm is designed to stop spreading on March 1, 2004. The virus may still be spread by email and still would allow an attacker to gain control of the computer.
